the Komodo dragon ( Varanus komodoensis ) is an endangered species that can only be found in the Komodo National park (KNP) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Given the unique and rare nature of Komodos, KNP was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

Located in West Manggarai district, Komodo Island and its surroundings are currently facing a waste problem. Based on research conducted by WWF Indonesia and KNP, the problem is the growing number of visitors, improperly disposed waste and garbage management facilities limited in the region.

A shock 90 percent of waste is in the form of plastic, leaving only 10% as waste. Accumulated waste clogs drains, piles under the trees and leaves littered the roads and beaches.

The alarming situation caused cooperation between the Government, WWF Indonesia and the public. In support of reducing the negative impact of waste in the region, the WWF began with the development of the awareness of people about waste management, supporting regulations.

In addition, the non-governmental organization has donated essential equipment to treat waste. The carrier, enumerator and press compact machine and reduce the high labor efficiency waste. However, it is the plastic trash that needs special attention; the non-biodegradable materials which form 90% of the debris.
