one night in 1998 after a concert in Manila, a woman approached me and my group and asked if we would be in a movie. Scenes of fame and fortune flashed before our collective eyes and we immediately began discussing how we would spend our millions. "Wine, women and song and waste the rest" was the consensus we clinked our glasses together vigorously and slapped each other on the back. The day had finally arrived! Then a sober moment. "Wait!" Our guy keyboard player suddenly shouted on our excited chatter, "It's not a porno is it ..?" We froze in silence for a moment and all eyes fell on the woman. A difficult past moment as she swallowed a sip of beer Then she said:.. "No, no, nothing like that ... I want you as foreign extras for a girly bar scene that we will turn around by next week" Ah. So we were kind of molded like bags Sleeze rather than rock stars and the film was not for us at all. We looked at each other. "Girly bar scene?" Our guitarist Jack repeated, incredulous. Then his face lit up. "Yeah baby!" And the celebrations started again. We were easily satisfied.
The film was Brokedown Palace with Claire Danes, Kate Beckinsale and Bill Pullman and directed by Jonathan Kaplan ( who currently heads Law and Order: Special Victims Unit for television), and we were indeed thrown like sacks of foreign Sleeze frequent a bar called girly Lollipop was supposed to be in Bangkok, but was actually the Cotton club Pasay City Manila. They could not shoot in Bangkok because the film is a true story and it is critical of the Thai legal system and how it treats the two girls played by Danes and Beckinsale in their drug smuggling trial . bla bla bla, who cares, back at the bar girl scene.
We arrived early morning at the Cotton Club as indicated, and we were immediately sent inside to take positions around the bar for filming. An American woman was in charge of casting extras and everyone had to file before it for selection as if it were a modern Mengele. She looked at us, and then headed to the bar area where she thought we would better fit. For some reason I am sent me to sit in the bar next to where Claire and Kate would make a dialogue, and the role was given to "bag Sleeze Tall" which, on a cue from lighting, would walk up to the scene where the girls dance and ask one of them to join him for a drink at the bar. My resentment to such casting was canceled by my eagerness to see the stars close.
Suddenly a door opened and about 30 young Filipinas walked in wearing nothing bikinis. Each was beautiful, and each of them was well thrown, if you know what I mean. They slowly took their positions on stage and the lights began to flash at the right time, they began to dance in time with the imaginary music. Claire and Kate arrived and took their positions, and when Kaplan yelled, "Action!" They started their dialogue in the strange silence flashing (the background music is added later, otherwise they would not be able record the dialogue). I saw my cue lighting, mounted on my stool as I had been instructed, walked to the stage and quietly asked the girl to join me at the bar. Since I'm back at the bar with her, I heard "Cut!" And the scene was over. Well at least this version was completed. Then a magical voice said, "Okay, we'll get the tops off of these girls ..." Yep It was to be a 18-rated version for some markets and we had to do it all again surrounded by the girls. topless. I missed my cue the first time in the second version. I snapped back to reality when Kaplan shouted, "Cut !!! Where is the bag Sleeze Grand? "I had to apologize. It was hard to focus. I hear the film was a terrible flop but it's one of my favorites of all time, even though I've never seen.
