Gerakan Indonesia Diet Kantong Plastik (GIDKP) is a social movement, advocating a "lifestyle of zero waste" and dieting use of plastic bags. One of their activities is #RampokPlastik, attacking people in the street and steal their plastic bags in exchange for reusable bags.
One of the "thieves", is Karunia, volunteer coordinator Chapter Bandung GIDKP. She discovered the vacancy to be a volunteer GIDKP through an online platform, Indorelawan.
"We have seen people in the park or in the street. Whoever brings plastic bags, we stopped them and offer reusable bags for free," she explained. Fortunately for her and the team, people do not mind the proposal. "Maybe because it's free, but we are happy that they have accepted it. At the very least, we successfully educated about the dangers of plastic bags on the environment," said Karunia.
#RampokPlastik is not the only activity they do. GIDKP also implored major retailers supermarket in Jakarta and Bandung for not giving free plastic bags.
"First, we surveyed the place, which the supermarket or shopping centers are still using plastic bags. Then we put in our database, "said Karunia.
From the results, they will update the petition then aim supermarkets or shopping centers that still use plastic bags. "Our ultimate goal is to see specific regulations that prohibit the use of all types of plastic bags," said Karunia.
